My boyfriend is a college student and i am graduating high school in 3 weeks. This summer we're planning on going on a vacation together, but obviously it's gotta be really affordable. So we want to be frugal but still have a great time. Is St. Simons Islands as calm as daytona beach in fl? Resolved Question: Has there been another week in American history with as much terrorism, tragedy & catastrophe as April 15-22?

Some of the horrific acts of violence perpetrated during this week in history had their dates deliberately chosen for symbolic reasons, and some of the acts of violence and catastrophic events occurred during this time of spring by coincidence (like the BP oil spill). To clarify, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, nor do I believe in curses. I don't feel like this week is tainted or subject to more tragedies and horrors than any other. I'm just making an observation that it seems like more calamities have happened either on US soil or directed at Americans during this week than is typical in our history. April 15, 2013 - Two explosives occur near the finish line of the Boston Marathon April 16, 2007 - Virginia Tech massacre. Seung-Hui Cho, a senior at Virginia Tech, shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others in an attack on his campus. April 18, 1983 - A suicide bomber destroys the United States Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 63 people. April 19, 1993 - The 51 day siege of the Branch Davidian building outside Waco, Texas, ends when a fire breaks out. 81 people died. April 19, 1995 - Oklahoma City bombing. 168 people were murdered, and hundred more were injured. Timothy McVeigh stated that he chose that date because he wanted to seek revenge on the federal government for their handling of the Waco Siege. April 20, 1999 - The Columbine High School Massacre in Colorado. 13 were killed and 24 were injured. There was media speculation that the date was chosen because it was Hitler's birthday, but no substantial evidence to support that theory. April 20, 2007 - Johnson Space Center Shooting at Nasa's space center in Houston, Texas. April 20, 2010 - The Deepwater Horizon explosion that killed 11 crew members. April 22, 2010 - Th Deepwater Horizon sank, leaving the well gushing and causing the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. I realize that other weeks have been bloodier and more devastating for other countries. For the purpose of the question, I only focused on American history. Have there been other weeks in our history with multiple violent and tragic events? more

Resolved Question: Should I go to The University of Cincinnati or Ohio University?

I've been accepted into pre-nursing major for both schools but I can't decide which is a better idea. My grandparents went to UC and my grandma was in a sorority there... But I've heard the faculty doesn't help you at all. OU has such a beautiful campus... But it has the party school reputation and its 2 hrs from any civilization. Also, I'm from California so this is a really big important decision... Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: Teens: Do you love the city you live in?

I love where I live (in VA). There are trees and fields of land and horses, and cows everywhere. I just love it. There is a forest at every corner, so the air is very fresh, and the mountain landscape I see while driving in the car is just wondeful. I also love all the lakes, and streams. My city is pretty much a shopping center with an apartment complex, 2 schools, and then a bunch of farms and houses surrounding it. I live on a 40 acre farm. :) What do you like about the place you live in? more

Resolved Question: What do people from Oregon think of southerners?

I'm a senior in high school and am probably going to the University of Oregon in 2013 and I was just curious as to what they thought of southerners. This isn't really a big deal to me as I have pretty much decided to go there. I am very liberal and am no where near a southern stereotype or have an accent. I am from a small town just outside of Athens, Georgia. I was just curious because I had meet a few people from the mid west who came down here and were legit surprised when everyone they found out we don't sit on our porches all day drinking mint juleps and sweet tea while watching a bunch of honey boo boo's run around. So do they have some biases(I assume they do like every other part of the country), just wondering, Eugene seems very laid back so not to worried about prejudices. more

Resolved Question: IS MY COLLEGE ESSAY OK?!?!?!?

Does my college essay seem ok? This is the common app main essay/ free response: My Life in Books Once upon a time there was a girl who loved stories. Every night her mother and father would spin her stories before she went to bed. Every night those stories would become her dreams, complete in three-act structure. When the little girl grew up a bit she learned to read. Quickly she chafed at the restraints of the children’s section. Everywhere she turned she was surrounded by books urging cheerfulness, helpfulness, sportsmanship, and above all, “niceness”. The girl rebelled at that. She was clever, wily, ambitious, stiff-necked, stubborn, idealistic, sometimes even kind. Not nice. Nice, to her, seemed an anti-adjective, a word that said nothing, but encompassed everything. Her mind was restless, and full of intellectual wanderlust. One day in the summer of third grade, she crept into her parents’ room and stole her father’s copy of the Odyssey. She read, enthralled, as cunning Odysseus wiled and schemed his way home. He was not the stainless, brainless hero endemic to children’s books. Odysseus and Penelope, and the goddess Athena herself, were clever and creative. They were more concerned with originality than crossing their psis and thetas. The story-girl felt a breathless rush of kinship. These were Her People. For a while she was satisfied - until her mind exploded outward. She had some sense of herself, but knew that her mind was not the world entire. She ripped through her school library like a hurricane, trying to learn as much about everything as she could. Over time, the girl’s relationship with books shifted. Like many shifts in history, it was philosophy’s fault. She was not content with knowing “how”. She needed to know “why”. So she entered into a conversation with books. She asked, “Are people good?” Almost simultaneously, Hobbes said “no” and Rousseau said “yes”. “Why is there evil?”, she wondered. A mad Russian tried to answer, but his inquisitor just sharpened the accusation. “Is there anything of real, absolute value in this world?”, she asked. Sartre shrugged and said, “Nah. I mean, existence precedes essence. If there is any meaning, it’s because we invented it after the fact.” She paused. “So why bother?”, she whispered, pleading. From the corner of the room, the soft still voice of J.D. Salinger (in the guise of Zooey Glass) replied “For the fat lady, who still expects the best from people”. The girl built a celestial city. Not as Bunyan would have it, with angels and trumpets, but as a patchwork quilt of humanity: the agora of Pericles’s Athens neighbored the Harlem of Hughes and Hurston and Ellington. The pothole-studded streets were lined with coffee houses. Inside, one might see Bob Dylan and T.S. Eliot exchanging drafts of poetry, Catherine the Great and Empress Theodora comparing tactics, or Thomas Jefferson and Jane Jacobs arguing about the relative merits of urban and rural settlements. For her, books were not merely paper, ink, and glue. Stories were more than the skeleton of tropes and stock characters. They were a passport to the world of ideas. The girl is me. I had a lot of trouble writing in first person, so lit-classed it up :) more

Resolved Question: Jobs Online for 16 Year Olds?

Resolved Question: Character Name for a Story?

I'm writing a story and I'm having a bit of an issue with the names. I just realized that the names of the three primary characters all end in "ie". I really like the names I've chosen, but they're way too similar and at least one must be changed. I feel like some suggestions from a third party might help sway me in the right direction. Character: Male, 16 years old. He was short and pudgy but has since leaned out and is now six feet tall and growing. He has light brown hair and blue eyes. He is the only son of largely uninvolved, middle class parents. He is a mix of many things, mainly being of Irish and German descent, though his name does not have to reflect that. He is a sort of burnout/class clown in his high school. Everyone knows him, but very few people are really close to him. His surname is Theron and his first name was originally Alfie. Please no rants about the merits of naming your characters, I'm looking for name suggestions and nothing else.I guess I should reiterate, the issue I have with the current name is that it, like several other characters, ends in an "ee" sound. So any name ending in that sound is a no go. more

Resolved Question: UGA or GSU? Please help!?

I am trying to decide on going to UGA or GSU. I will be majoring in Creative Writing and Mass Communications. I have already been accepted to UGA, but I live in Atlanta and I really like the city. Obviously UGA is the more prestigious school, but I am worried about not fitting in at UGA and not being able to reach my full potential because I am uncomfortable. I am already familiar with the city, and I like the GSU campus, but it is also important to me that I am going to a good school. I am 25 and I know UGA has a much younger crowd, and I am not really crazy about the party atmosphere in Athens. Also I would have to re-locate to Athens...Is it worth it? Is the Communications program there that amazing? If anyone that has attended one or both of these schools could please help me! Will I be hurting myself more if I go to GSU (the less prestigious school), or if I go to UGA (where I might not find my place / be unhappy)? Please help, this has been driving me crazy, and I need to decide soon! Thank you so much for your help! more

Resolved Question: Why are unions always involved in civil unrest?

11/14/12 http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/14/us-spain-portugal-strike-idUSBRE8AD00020121114: Police and protesters clashed in Spain on Wednesday as millions of workers went on strike across Europe to protest spending cuts they say have made the economic crisis worse. Hundreds of flights were cancelled, car factories and ports were at a standstill and trains barely ran in Spain and Portugal where unions held their first ever coordinated general strike. Riot police arrested at least two protesters in Madrid and hit others with batons, witnesses said, and in Rome students pelted police with rocks in a protest over money-saving plans for the school system. "We're on strike to stop these suicidal policies," said Candido Mendez, head of Spain's second-biggest labor federation, the General Workers' Union, or UGT. Protesters jammed cash machines with glue and coins and plastered anti-government stickers on shop windows. Power consumption dropped 16 percent with factories idled. International lenders and some economists say the programs of tax hikes and spending cuts are necessary for putting public finances back on a healthy track after years of overspending. While several southern European countries have seen bursts of violence, a coordinated and effective regional protest to the austerity has yet to gain traction and governments have so far largely stuck to their policies. Spain, where the crisis has pushed millions into poverty, has seen some of the biggest protests. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is trying to put off asking for European aid that could require even more budget cuts. Passion was inflamed when a Spanish woman jumped to her death last week as bailiffs tried to evict her from her home. Spaniards are furious at banks being rescued with public cash while ordinary people suffer. "I'm on strike because those who work are basically being blackmailed into sacrificing more and more in the name of debt reduction, which is a big lie," said Daniel Santos de Jesus, 43, who teaches architecture at the Lisbon Technical University. In Barcelona, Spain's second-biggest city, hundreds of trash containers were taken off the streets to stop them being burnt. Italy's biggest union, CGIL, also called for a work stoppage of several hours across the country. The transport ministry expected trains and ferries to stop for four hours. Students and teachers were expected to march. Holding banners reading "Enough is Enough" state workers started rallying on several squares in central Athens on Wednesday morning. Spain's economy, the euro zone's fourth biggest, will shrink by some 1.5 percent this year, four years after the crash of a decade-long building boom left airports, highways and high-rise buildings disused across the country. Portugal's economy is expected to contract by 3 percent. Unemployment stands at 25 percent and every week brings fresh job cuts. "We have to leave something better for our children," said Rocio Blanco, 47, a railway worker on the picket line at Madrid's main rail station, Atocha. more

Resolved Question: Do you think people in Ohio are country, or city folk?

I really wanna know, cause im from ohio, I've grown up in the what people call the "country parts of Ohio" (athens and lancaster) I dont really know what to consider myself. I mean, they're small towns, schools with only like 200 kids. I grew up hunting every once and a while. I was taugh to shoot raccoons and squirrls with a BB gun when i was 6 or 7. I know how to shuck corn, catch frogs. I rode horses. Worked on my friends farm ( I LOVE animals<3) . Never really had alot of money, so outside is usually my toy until dark. But I gues not everyone is like this. But I dont know. what do yall think? Do you think imma country or city folk ? Do you think Ohio in general is a coutnry or city state? Im just wondering, It kinda just popped up in my mind and i wanna know what other people think(: I guess I wont be affended by what yall think, so just tell me I really wanna know(:But i have a phobia for bugs, not all of them , but most. I got bit by a poisinous spider (of course not deathly poisenous) but my ankle swelled up REALLY bad, I had to wrap it up and use cruches for 2 months, they said they almost had to amputate my leg but they gave me 2 shots in it and the swelling finally went down. Ever since then Ive ALWAYS been scared of bugs. Always will be:\ more

Resolved Question: What colleges should I consider?

I'm a sophomore in high school and starting to think about colleges and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about where to go or how to better my chances of getting in. I am in all honors classes and I do well in them. I have a 3.8 gpa and im at least in the top 10% if not top 5. I've also always had high honors. I have been on a competition dance team for years and will continue throughout high school. That goes all year. I ran outdoor track last year but this year I think I will do softball in the spring and then run indoor track in the winter. (I did outdoor freshman year which is spring so I don't know if that makes a difference) I'm also considering doing dance team in the winter but that might be difficult to fit dance, dance team, and track so I'm not sure. I'm starting to volunteer with the special Olympics. And I also have a lot of little volunteer things from recently completing my confirmation. I got the freshman award for French last year (which only one person gets) I was in national junior honor society, and I will probobly be in national honor society as well as the French honor society. I want to be a dermatologist when I grow up but I'm also very passionate about French. Therefore I want to be a pre med with a French major (I heard that you could be any major as long as you meet pre med requirements. Correct me if I'm wrong) so I want schools with a good French program, preferably with study abroad options, that would also look good on an application to medical school. The school has to be somewhere warm most of the year. I don't want it to drop below freezing more than 3 times a year (although 0 would be best) and I'm not willing to compromise on that. I would also like a small-medium college (around 6000 students) and in or near a city would be great. But even if it's not in a city I would be ok as long as there's lots to do. I could also settle for just about any size as long as its not too huge (30000 would be really pushing it) more

Resolved Question: Did your school separate students into bottom, middle, and gifted classes?

When I was in 3rd grade, I attended a public school (P.S. 254) in Brooklyn, New York City and I remember very clearly that students were split in bottom, middle, and (eagle) gifted classes. -Is this correct or did I remember incorrectly? Has anyone else attended a public school in NYC and did your school have different classes like mine? When I was in 4th and 5th grade, I attended a public school (Barrow Elementary P.S.) in Athens, Georgia and I remember that we were all put into homeroom classes but when it was time for math, English, and science, everyone also separated into different different classes: bottom, middle, and (spectrum) gifted classes. -Is this also correct or did I remember incorrectly? Resolved Question: How would you go about writing this essay?

Analyze and interpret the following quotation: “The confrontation of Western civilization with other peoples whose values were often dramatically opposed to the West’s…suggests that by the dawn of the twentieth century, the tradition and sense of centeredness that had defined indigenous cultures for hundreds, even thousands, of years was either threatened or in the process of being destroyed. Worldwide, non-Western cultures suddenly found that they were defined as outposts of new colonial empires developed by Europeans, resulting in the weakening of traditional cultural practices, political leadership, and social systems that had been in place for centuries.” (Sayre, 2013, pp. 410-411). In the later nineteenth and early twentieth century, what would this “loss of centeredness” of culture have meant for a given cultural group? Select from among the non-Western cultural groups noted in the text (Native American, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, or African) and research the impact of Western or European cultures on that group. What was the selected non-Western culture like prior to the late nineteenth century? How did it change as a result of European expansion? How is this change representative of what Sayre calls a “loss of centeredness?” Be sure to use specific examples and details.I dont want anything written for me, just ideas on what each paragraph should be about more

Resolved Question: Where are some good places to travel in Europe?

Okay so this is planing way in advanced but I like to map my life out so, I guess it's okay. I'm going into my sophomore year in high school and my mom just decided to go to Rome without me. I was really upset but to make it up to me she said for my graduation trip I could go with a few friends and my older brother around Europe. I want it to go well, and have as few complications as possible. I mean I know with any trip like this, there are going to be a few. So I was wondering where the best places would be for a trip like this. I know I want to go to London, probably France, but thats about it. I don't know how long we'll be gone for as of right now because the trip is a little under three years away, like I said I'm a planner. I know I will be seventeen though. My brother will be twenty-two, twenty-three depending on when we go, and the friend that I'm taking will be eighteen. There might be a few other people going but thats all we know for sure so far. Thanks so much! Jane more

i live in Athens, one of the most ugly, polluted cities in Europe, which is full of ugly graffitties, ugly flats, closed shops, people who die everyday from drugs and homeless people. i hate it and i cant live in this country anymore. i dont live exactly on the center, but its the same for me. im 15 years old and i have already hated where i live. i was in Dublin this summer for two months and i can understand the difference. i hav been staying in a summer college and i met so many people there. children from other countries are so open minded and so different from the ones in greece. they have opinion, the read, the have their own taste in music and movies. the dont pretend to be someones and they dont listen or see whatever they tell them. they "search"... how to say it, i dont know. thats why i dont have friends in my school in greece. i cant be friends with them. they all have a complitely different mentality from the people i like to be friend with. i have three years in front of me to stay in greece and go to school and i already tired. i cant find the strength to keep up with this way of living here. ive been feeing like this for two years now, but now its even worse. are tree years a long time? how am i going to study for school? i cant. im already exausted... and the worst is that i dont have a thing to do here anymore. to go where? with all these things that happen everyday in greece youre afraid to leave from your own house. theres nothing that gives me plaisure in this country anymore. i shouldnt have been greek. this is a mistake. i dont belong here... i swear that when i and high school im going to leave from here and when i do this, i will never come back. so are three years a long time? please tell me and help me. thanks more

Resolved Question: How is it possible that all the famous greeks are linked?

I know the classical period only went for 200 years, but the actual greek empire went for much longer! I just find it crazy that somehow that the most famous greeks we know today knew each other. Socrates taught Plato who was aquainted with and taught Aristotle who tutored Alexander the Great. Also I'm not entirely sure about warriors but the philosophical figures I mentioned lived to ages of 70 - 90 and I checked others who lived similar ages. I suspect warriors didn't live so long from battles, but if we take them out of the equation then it would seem that the classical period had a similar age expectancy as now, for the wealthy anyways. Age expectancies through much the rest of time up until the industrial revolution were much lower, and it would seem this was the highest life expectancy until the modern era more

Resolved Question: What is the best historical novel focusing around the battle of thermopylae and the 300 spartans?

I am into reading historical fiction and mythology books, and have recently read "the song of Achilles," by Madeline Miller. After reading this I wanted to read more about Greek mythology and just general stories around this time period, most notably, the battle of Thermopylae. Can anyone recommend a good novel focusing around this book? more
